The Cost of a Homemade Loaf

After reading a report on the BBC website regarding the cost implications of baking your own bread I had to respond! By all means, cost it the way they did and you could soon be out of pocket but if, like me, you bake all your own bread for the purposes of moneysaving, then think on... we 'knead' to know how to do it on a budget. Here's how: read more

  1. I think our two loaves of basic bread cost 50p - 60p maybe 70p - 80p when we add seed and nuts. Don't know what they are on about!

    1. Shockingly! they have changed the article yet again... three changes from the British Broadcasting Corporation taking their story all the way from No you can't, to yes you can! Disgusted by their blatant lack of respect for the intelligence of their readership.

  2. This morning (Wed) the Daily Mail has a whole page devoted to our prime minister and his use of a breadmaker and also the cost of a loaf. To buy an 800g loaf they say costs from 47pto £1.50. To make one in a breadmaker they have costed out at 95p at the cheapest.

I think your analysis of the cost is rather better than theirs and probably closer to our own : )

ps David Cameron uses the cheapest Panasonic model of breadmaker and he also uses Cotswold Crunch flour at......wait for it........ £4.38 for 1.5 Kg!

    1. Oh good grief, I hope they didn't copy it word for word on the original ingredients or they'll kill off half the population with oil overdose! Now you see how easily false information is spread by the good old BBC and their spin doctors. I never go near the Daily Mail (or any other newspapers, for that matter) unless a neighbour hands them in for me to make kindling sticks or paper bricks.

  3. I usually buy a 20kg sack from a wholesaler and it has gone up recently but no more than £15. We mix it with self ground wholewheat. Had the grinder for many years. Makes lovely bread
